Spain
Bunol, near Valencia, is known for hosting the largest food fight in the world. It is also home to the world’s most famous food fight. La Tomatina begins in the main square, with breakfast provided for all. Some brave souls attempt to climb a soapy pole and grab the ham suspended from the top. At 11 a.m., a truckload full of tomatoes is brought into the square. The fight starts. Everyone is eventually hosed down after the last tomato is thrown. The mayor assures everyone that the tomatoes are safe for human consumption.
It is great fun to throw tomatoes but Bunol is worth the trip outside of Tomatina. A 13-century castle, picturesque squares, parks, and mountainous surroundings are all worth the trip.
