Benchmark Your Current SEO Performance

Before you start optimizing your website, it is important to benchmark your current performance. There are many tools that can help with this like SEMrush, Ahrefs, but one of the most popular ones is Screaming Frog.

Screaming Frog is free software used to crawl web pages and analyze their HTML code. You can then use its results to find out which URLs have been indexed by major search engines, see how much competition there is for any given URL, identify duplicate content, check the page load time of each page, etc.

You can also use it to determine whether or not your website has been hacked. If you find any errors, you can fix them using Screaming Frog’s built-in repair tool.

Steps:

  1. Open up ScreamingFrog.com and log in.
  2. Click “Crawl” at the top left corner.
  3. Enter your domain name as the target URL.
  4. Select the depth level (how far down the webpage should be searched). In our case, we’ll select 3 levels.
  5. Hit the button “Start Crawling”.
  6. Wait until the crawling process is done. You can now proceed to step 7.
  7. Analyze the results. Here, you will get information regarding your website’s ranking for different keywords.

Analyze Your Competitors’ SEO Strategies

Once you know where you stand, it is time to compare yourself against your competitors. You can use SEMrush to find out the important metrics.

SEMrush provides data regarding several aspects of your competitor’s websites, such as monthly visits, average position, bounce rate, time spent on the page, conversion rates, backlinks, etc.

Set Your Goals and KPIs

Long tail keywords are the ones that usually don’t bring high traffic because they often have low search volume. However, having long-tail keywords on your site makes sense because they are more likely to convert.

Cluster content refers to pieces of content that fall under one umbrella term. For example, if you sell pet supplies, you might create an article called “How to Choose Pet Supplies.” That way, all related products like dog food, cat litter, toys, etc., can be included in the same article.

In order to optimize cluster content, you will need to do two things:

  1. Find long-tail keywords.
  2. Create and link to various sub-pages within each cluster.

Use the Right Tools

There are many tools available that you can use to perform basic tasks like finding keywords and analyzing your search engine traffic. These tools will save you tons of time and money.

Google Search Console

This tool allows you to monitor your search engine optimization efforts. It provides detailed reports that show how your website ranks compared to other sites.

You can also use it to submit changes directly from your dashboard.

  1. Google Analytics – With this tool, you can see which keywords drive visitors to your site and how much time they spend there. You can even export the data to Excel.
  2. MozBar – This tool lets you find out who is linking to your site, where they found you, and what kind of links they have. All these details are useful in terms of improving your online reputation.

Once you know your keywords and cluster content, it’s time to start building links to your site. Here are some ways to get started:
